The McLaren driver edged out team-mate and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the quickest lap in the final moments of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who seized the points lead from his teammate by just one point after taking the win in Mexico City two weeks ago, beat the Melbourne-born driver by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver during the running before sprint qualifying set to begin at 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the other racer in the points battle, sitting with a 36-point deficit Norris, ended up in 17th place as his Red Bull team ran a alternative strategy. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to go off, albeit lightly, when he lost control at the fourth corner during the early running. The Japanese lost control over the track edges before rotating through the gravel trap, and was blessed to avoid just a light touch of the fence. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the final moments of the practice, spinning around through the fast downhill Mergulho corner leading to the final corner on to the start-finish straight. The seven-time champion finished practice in P19, one place behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren pair were significantly quicker of the rest of the field, with the German's Sauber P3, 0.619 seconds off the Australian's time. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth fastest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto fifth from Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
