Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

After a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
